How to Choose the Right Dog Crate Size (Without Guesswork)
Share
Picking the perfect crate isn’t just about looks — size matters. Too small, and your dog feels cramped. Too big, and it loses that cozy, den-like feel. Here’s a simple guide to finding the right fit, based on your dog’s breed, build, and behavior.
📏 1. Measure Your Dog, Not Just Their Breed
Grab a tape measure. You’ll want two key measurements:
- Length: Measure from nose to base of tail (not tip!)
- Height: Measure from the ground to the top of the head or ears — whichever is taller
Add about 5–10 cm (2–4") to each number to ensure comfort and room to turn around.
🐶 2. Account for Sleeping Style
Does your dog curl up tightly or stretch out like a rug? Stretchers often need more room. If your dog sleeps like a little donut, a more compact crate can still feel cozy and safe.
📦 3. The Crate Should Be…
- Big enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably
- Small enough to feel secure — you’re not building a room, you’re creating a den
⚖️ 4. Think About Weight & Strength
Larger or stronger dogs need sturdier materials. All of our wooden crates are built to handle medium to large breeds — just make sure to choose the size that matches your dog’s proportions, not just their weight.
🐾 5. Planning for a Puppy?
Get the size they’ll grow into — not the one they are now. For smaller breeds, you may not need to upsize. But for large-breed puppies, consider a crate that will suit them into adulthood. You can use soft dividers temporarily if needed.
🎁 Final Thought
The right size crate is about comfort, safety, and well-being. It should feel like a room with just enough space to relax — not a warehouse or a shoebox. And when it fits right, your dog will naturally love being inside.
